Educational Improvement and Assistance
Distinguished Educator Program
Overview
The Distinguished Educator Program was established in 1999 with the passage of R.S. 17:10.4. Distinguished Educators assist schools in strengthening their curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices. The primary goal of Distinguished Educators is to creatively and assertively assist struggling schools in reaching and surpassing their Growth Targets under the Louisiana School and District Accountability System. The program, which is modeled after the successful Kentucky program, is an important component of the statewide accountability program that provides direct individual assistance to schools that do not reach their growth targets and enter into School Improvement 3 or higher.
Thirteen schools participated in the initial Distinguished Educator pilot program beginning in fall 1999 and extending through Spring 2001. Of these thirteen schools, the 2001 accountability results indicated that four schools achieved Exemplary Academic Growth, and six achieved Recognized Academic Growth. In 2001 the program was expanded and is a state funded initiative.
Distinguished Educators act as external change agents to facilitate school improvement. In carrying out this role, Distinguished Educators help the school staff to identify and eliminate barriers to change as well as promote necessary school consensus for change.
