The Louisiana Department of Education provides those ancillary educational services that can be of benefit to the state's population, but often are not perceived as directly related to traditional K-12 education. These services include the following:

  • Community based tutorial programs offer after-school and summer tutorial assistance to Louisiana’s school aged children.
  • Migrant Education programs address the special educational needs of migratory children.
  • Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act (Title IV) provides drug and violence prevention programs that are essential components of a comprehensive strategy to promote school safety, to reduce the demand for and use of drugs, and to create learning environments that support academic achievement for all students.
  • School Transportation is a state mandated effort to provide safe, efficient transportation for riders of the state’s 7,800 school busses.
  • Nutrition Support Programs are designed to provide nutritious, wholesome, balanced meals and snacks for eligible children and adults which is fundamental to enabling an optimal environment in which learning and development can occur.
  • Parental Involvement programs foster family literacy initiatives that are an integral part of every program within this office.
